Underline Text Generator
Type your text and get an underlined version that keeps its line in any app: "Read this" becomes "R̲e̲a̲d̲ ̲t̲h̲i̲s̲". Copy it into a caption, a bio, a comment or a message.
The preview is shortened. Copy and Download include the whole result.
Your text never leaves your device.
Styled text is made of special Unicode symbols, not a real font. Screen readers may read it letter by letter or skip it, and search may not find it, so don't use it for important information such as names, links or contact details.
How to use
- Type or paste the words you want underlined.
- The underlined version appears immediately; the line continues under the spaces.
- Copy the result and paste it where you need it.
Examples
- Before

When underlining makes sense
Underline comes from typewriters and handwriting, where it was the only way to emphasize a word. In typeset text, italics and bold took over that job, and on the web underline came to mean “this is a link”. So use it on purpose:
- Titles and headings in a caption, where bold feels too heavy: “M̲e̲n̲u̲”, “R̲u̲l̲e̲s̲”.
- Signatures and sign-offs in posts and messages.
- Highlighting one key phrase in a long caption that has no other formatting.
How it behaves
Every character, including spaces and punctuation, gets one combining low line, so the underline runs continuously from the first to the last character. Line breaks are kept and do not get a line, so multi-line text is underlined line by line. Emoji are left as they are. Accented letters work: é keeps its accent and gets the line below.
If you paste text that is already underlined, the generator removes its own underline marks first, so you never end up with doubled lines.
The exact look depends on the font of the app: on most phones the line sits just under the letters, with very small gaps between characters in some fonts.
Common mistakes
- Underlining long text. A continuous line under several sentences is heavy and slows reading. Keep it to a few words.
- Expecting the line to skip descenders. The tails of g, p and y are crossed. Choose words without them for headings if that bothers you.
- Doubling the character count. Each underlined character counts as two. An Instagram bio of 150 characters fits about 75 underlined characters.
- Using it for important details. Screen readers may announce “combining low line” after every letter or skip the text entirely. Keep dates, prices and contact details plain.
Frequently asked questions
How do I underline text on Instagram or Facebook?
Instagram and Facebook have no underline option. Type your text here, copy the underlined version and paste it into the post, caption or comment. The underline is part of the characters, so everyone sees it.
How does the underline work?
The generator adds the Unicode character "combining low line" (U+0332) after every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark. A combining character is drawn under or over the character before it, so the short lines join into one continuous underline.
Why does the line cross letters like g, p and y?
The combining low line is drawn at a fixed height just below the baseline, and the tails of g, j, p, q and y reach lower than that. Real underlining in word processors skips around these tails; Unicode underlining cannot. Words without descenders look cleanest.
Can I underline in Discord or Word instead?
Yes, and it is better where available: __text__ underlines in Discord, Ctrl+U (Cmd+U) in Word, Google Docs and most email apps. Real formatting is accessible and searchable. Use the generator for apps that have no formatting.
Will underlined text look like a link?
On the web, underlined text is the standard sign of a link, so some readers will try to tap it. In a caption where links do not work anyway, that is a smaller problem, but avoid underlining in places where real links appear next to it.
