What makes a good slug
A slug is part of the address people see in search results, share in messages and type into the browser. The safest slugs follow a few rules:
- Lowercase only. Most servers treat /Blog/ and /blog/ as different pages, which splits links and creates duplicates.
- Hyphens between words. No spaces (they become %20), no underscores for public pages.
- ASCII letters and digits. Accented or Cyrillic letters work in modern browsers but turn into long %D0%B6 sequences when copied.
- Short and descriptive. Keep the main keyword, drop dates and filler unless they matter.
This generator applies all of them at once and trims separators from both ends, so “–Hello–” becomes “hello”.
Transliteration rules
Russian and Ukrainian are transliterated in a practical, search-friendly style rather than an academic one: ж → zh, ц → ts, ч → ch, ш → sh, щ → shch, ю → yu, я → ya, ы → y, й → y, and the hard and soft signs disappear. Ukrainian і, ї and є become i, yi and ye. Latin letters lose their accents through Unicode decomposition, so the Spanish, French, German, Polish and Turkish alphabets all reduce to clean a–z.
Common mistakes
- Changing a slug after publishing. The old URL breaks and loses its links. If you must change it, add a 301 redirect from the old address.
- Copying the full title. “The Ultimate Complete Guide to Baking Bread at Home in 2026” makes a slug that is cut off in search results; “baking-bread-at-home” is better.
- Keeping case. The Lowercase option is there for file names and code; for web pages leave it on.
- Leaving symbols in. & or # inside a URL changes its meaning; the generator removes them.
Bulk slugs
Paste a whole list of titles, one per line, and every line becomes its own slug in the same order. Empty lines stay empty, so the output lines up with a spreadsheet column.
Everything runs in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
A slug is the readable part of a URL that names a page: in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-bread/, the slug is "how-to-bake-bread". Good slugs are short, lowercase, use hyphens between words and contain only the letters a–z and digits, so they work everywhere without percent-encoding.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, so "red-shoes" is read as "red shoes", while "red_shoes" may be read as one word. Underscores are common in file names and code identifiers, which is why the option is there.
What happens to accents and non-Latin letters?
Accents are removed (é → e, ñ → n, ü → u), special letters are spelled out (ß → ss, æ → ae, ø → o), and Russian and Ukrainian letters are transliterated: ж → zh, х → h, щ → shch, я → ya. Scripts without a simple Latin form, such as Hebrew, Chinese or emoji, are dropped.
Why does "don't" become "dont" and not "don-t"?
Apostrophes are removed without a separator, so contractions and possessives stay one word: "Joe's Diner" becomes "joes-diner". Every other symbol, including &, /, dots and dashes of any kind, becomes a single separator, and separators at the start or end are trimmed.
Should I remove words like "the" and "and" from slugs?
Only when the slug is long. Short stop words rarely hurt, and removing them can change the meaning: "to-be-or-not-to-be" says something "be-not" does not. Aim for three to six meaningful words and edit the result by hand if needed.
